Integrate advance care planning in your curriculum

All health professionals and individual support workers have a role in advance care planning (ACP) and respecting their patients' medical treatment decision-making autonomy.

In the context of the current global health climate, an ageing population and increased prevalence of chronic illness, a large proportion of health practitioners and individual support workers will require the knowledge and skills to facilitate quality ACP.

Registered health practitioners have legal and ethical obligations to support ACP as defined by relevant legislation and health profession codes of conduct and practice standards.

Many health professionals in the workplace report a lack of confidence with ACP. Typically they report that they did not receive any formal education in ACP as part of their training and that they would benefit from it.

Few health practitioners receive education in ACP as part of their training. This framework aims to provide a structure to support the development of health professionals' knowledge and skills in the area of ACP which is essential in providing patient-centred care.

Framework

Framework Implementation Guide

This guide is for Australian education providers who are responsible for developing a capable health and aged care workforce. The guide aims to support the implementation of the advance care planning (ACP) education capability framework into a Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses, undergraduate, postgraduate and/or specialty training.

The guide was developed to be flexible and allow adaptation to suit the education requirements for several health professional groups at varying levels of experience and be integrated into existing curricula via multiple teaching strategies.

The guide and supporting educational resources are designed to enable teaching staff to self-select relevant ACP content covering:

  • integral communication skills
  • ethical considerations involved in ACP
  • relevant legal and professional obligations

Download our implementation guide to find out how you can integrate ACP into your curriculum.
