Research

National advance care planning research and collaborations are a key priority for Advance Care Planning Australia. Our research is overseen by a National Advance Care Planning Research Advisory Group. We collaborate with many leading universities and organisations to deliver robust research initiatives and build high-level evidence. We shared our evidence and findings via academic and grey literature publications.

Current research projects

Advance care directive prevalence study project

During 2018-20, ACPA has been funded by the Australian Government to deliver the Prevalence of Advance Care Planning Documentation in Australian Health and Residential Aged Care Services study. This study will collect a national dataset on the uptake of ACDs across jurisdictions, sectors, medical conditions and services.

The findings of this study have implications for policy makers, stakeholder organisations, service providers and the community, within Australia and internationally.

Substitute decision-maker project

Substitute decision makers make health and personal care decisions on someone’s behalf if the person can no longer decide themselves. However, some substitute-decision makers experience stress, guilt and doubt when making medical decisions because of uncertainty regarding the clinical outcomes of their decision to accept or decline life-prolonging treatment.

This substitute-decision maker project aims to review existing available resources for substitute-decision makers nationally and survey the Australian general public to better understand their knowledge, attitudes and concerns regarding substitute-decision making. The findings will help inform future strategies and resources that will optimise decision-making confidence and coping pathways for people who need to make difficult end-of-life decisions on someone’s behalf.

Clinicians’ perspectives on adhering to Advance Care Directives for patients with chronic disease

The aim of this study is to describe the perspectives of doctors involved in the care of patients with chronic disease. It involves qualitative interviews to explore doctors’ experiences and attitudes regarding ACDs, to gain a deeper understanding about ACD adherence and implementation in clinical practice.
