Medical Treatment Planning and Decisions Act 2016 Implementation Forum

The Department of Health and Human Services is holding a forum on Victorian advance care planning initiatives and the implementation of the Medical Treatment Planning and Decisions Act 2016.

The forum will feature a series of workshops and presentations facilitated by consumer, legal, medical and health representatives from the Victorian Office of the Public Advocate, the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services and Victorian health services. 

The objectives of the forum are to:

  • highlight the importance of advance care choices and planning, informed consent and a person-centred approach in health care provision
  • provide strategies for effective communication around advance care planning for patients, caregivers, families and health practitioners
  • assist medical, nursing and other health practitioners to acquire and enhance skills in advance care planning processes, systems and documentation
  • outline key legislative changes to advance care planning and advance care directives in Victoria and their impact on clinical practice
  • discuss the considerations of making an advance care directive and appointing a substitute decision maker and medical treatment decision maker
  • discuss organisational readiness for the implementation of the Medical Treatment Planning and Decisions Act 2016
