Free online learning in advance care planning
Our microlearning campaigns help health professionals, care workers and students build their knowledge and skills in advance care planning.
Each campaign:
- takes just 10 to 30 minutes
- includes 12 quiz questions
- gives you explanations after each response to support learning.
After you finish a campaign, you can:
- download a certificate of completion
- access the training material, including the full quiz content and explanations, in the learning library.
Campaigns for individuals are available on demand. If you’re an organisation or health service, you can contact us to set up unique learning campaigns with only your participants enrolled. Email us at education@advancecareplanning.org.au

Campaign 3 – Continuing the conversation
The scenarios are realistic and the consistent focus on person centred and communication is really great. It’s not too long - so it’s easy for people to start and be willing to complete.

Campaign 4 – Inclusive approaches
These campaigns are really helpful, particularly the explanations that give context to the correct and less correct options.

Communities of practice
We support opportunities for advance care planning practitioners to network and share knowledge and best practice through communities of practice.
They’re established in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria. They operate with their own terms of reference, developed and endorsed by members. Each community of practice is led by one or more state-based chairs. Online meetings are held 3 to 4 times a year and face to face meetings are at the discretion of members.
Contact us if you’re interested in joining a community of practice or if you’d like to discuss creating one in another state or territory.

Framework for education providers
This framework provides a structure to support the development of health professionals' knowledge and skills in advance care planning.
Framework overview
The framework is primarily for educators to use in vocational education and training sector training packages and university programs that prepare the health and aged care workforce.
The framework helps education providers to incorporate advance care planning into their curriculum. It aims to provide a range of education resources including online modules, lecture topics and interdisciplinary case studies that allow for simulation and role-play.
The framework outlines expected skills that a health professional would demonstrate across 5 key content areas:
- Communication with the person/family/carers
- Communication with the team
- Communication over time
- Ethics
- Law
Implementing the framework
A guide is available to support the implementation of the framework into courses and specialty training. The guide and supporting educational resources enable teaching staff to self-select relevant advance care planning content.
Download the Advance care planning education capability framework: implementation guide 2022 [PDF 1357.03 KB] to find out how to integrate advance care planning into your curriculum.

Case studies
Ten realistic and specific case studies have been developed for educators. They can be modified as required.
The case studies directly reflect the level one capabilities outlined in the framework. They can be used with students with a limited understanding of advance care planning.
